Fresh for WordPress

Updated: Latest version 2.0 with full widgets support is now available.

A WordPress port of Bartelme's Fresh theme as I promised yesterday, is now here. Actually I had been requested by several of my friends to port it long ago. Since Bartelme now allows everyone to use this old design, I filled my buddies' requests and would like to make the port public.

~~My demo blog is now ready to serve~~, you can preview the themes there.

This port validates as XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.0, it is ready for plugins Gravatar and Brian's Latest Comments. Tested under Firefox / IE / Safari.

I think all are perfect except this little icon:
It will be better if you change the color to blue or gray.
Anyway,it's just my viewpoint.

Thanks for the theme. I tried it but there is a problem it seems. If you go the site, and look at the footer, there seems to be an image missing. All I can see is white background. Please help me. Thanks.

You do not need to fix anything. The problem was that I had a long post title and thats why the image did not show up correctly. I just shortened the title and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the wonderful theme.

One more thing. On your site the categories and archives are displayed side by side whereas when I use the theme they are below each other. Why is that so. Thanks.

@Anshul: You didn't need to shortend the entry title because actually it was a bug. I fixed that bug as well as the sidebar bug. You can choose to display sidebar items side by side or like normal, just look into sidebar.php and I'm sure you'll know how to do it. Now please re-download the package.

Great work. Thanks for your effort. There is just one tiny little remark: could you please remove the favicon from the package or at least replace it with another one? It's kinda confusing having multiple "Bartelme Design" favicons in my tab bar or in my RSS reader

Well, I solved the problem changing WP from italian translation to the original files.

Meanwhile I noticed that the "Archive" section only displays the last 12 months and not all the history (till 2004 on my site). How could I fix this?

I noticed that Hashcash stopped working with this theme. Any ideas why?

It's a very good theme. I don't know why, but i try to use this theme, and show me the error in the bottom of the posts spaces, and don't show me the comment form in the post page.

@Giorgio Zarrelli: Simply open sidebar.php, search for "type=monthly&limit=12", replace the "12" with a zero.

LEMONed, thanks for realeasing the theme, it looks amazing.

I've just got one question, is there any way to selectively disable the border that is placed around images? It looks really good around pictures, but terrible around smilies because it moves the text around them too much (you can see the effect if you go here.

Love how you split the sidebar as well, very efficient.

Thank you Evilasio. But, if I put a 0 it doesn't work, it doesn't display any archives. Just for now I wrote "24" and it works somehow.

hey lemon... I deleted the search bar at the top because i have a google search... Now in IE (v.6) it cuts off the bottom half of Home and Admin. Is there a way to fix that. It shows up fine firefox.

@Jonathan: Well, that should not be a big problem. There's a few optional tweaks to do, and here is my suggestion:

open header.php, remove the whole div which is with the class "searchbar" (I guess you've already done so).

open the css file, remove "float:left;" which appeared in both line#149 and line#156.

If this does not work, send me an email with your header.php, sidebar.php and style.css attached, I'll see what I can do for you.

@alf: I am so sorry but your comment had been caught by Akismet. Yes, that can be easily fixed. Open the css file and add this at line#298 or so:

.postentry img.wp-smiley,
.postentry img.wp-smiley:hover {
border: none;
}

Or you can re-download the package. Thanks for reporting another seeming bug!

Fresh is the best WP theme I've seen in a long time.

The focus on RSS feeds is brilliant and the expanded navigation at the bottom is unconventional but not so unconventional that it appears confusing or out of place.

I can't wait to see your next theme, but I'm going to use Fresh for a long time.

Hi LEMONed, from my web server logs, it seems that there's a missing file in the zip:

fresh/images/wrapper.gif

It's required by the stilesheet you wrote:

egrep -r wrapper.gif *
style.css: background: #fff url(images/wrapper.gif) repeat-y 0 0;

But it's not in the images directory, not even in the zip from your site.

Just a little tip to anyone else who is trying to remove the border from the smileys, it helps to hold down Ctrl while you hit refresh before you freak out (the CSS stylesheet hadn't refreshed when I hit F5 so I started digging through the code... )

How am I supposed to "tell" you how you should decorate your links.php? Please supply more detail and I'm always glad to help.

1, Categories managemnt problem: got no clue to group sub-categories under parent Categories; Kindly gimme a hint.

@anada: To ID a child-category you simply replace the "-23" with a zero in the stylesheet:

ul.splittedlists ul li {
margin: 0 0 0 -23px;
}

Moreover, if you also want to add a dot(icon) beside each sub-cat, just refer to ul.splittedlists li.

Please re-download the package to see if the page navigation gets back to normal.

@alf: Not difficult at all. Just open index.php and single.php, look for the code "</span> " in each file, and add the following codes next to them:

<span>Written by: <?php the_author(); ?></span>

IE7 doesn't like the sidebar. If I add to the sidebar (pages, links, etc.) and the page displayed isn't longer than the sidebar, then the sidebar is cut off at the bottom of the page. Hope this makes sense. Let me know what you think.

Hey Jonathan, you need to edit the URL for the posts. Go to your wordpress admin panel and then go to Options and then go to Permalink Options. There you can choose the way post URL's are generated.

Hey, I'm really enjoying working with your Fresh theme. I've been playing extensively with it at http://www.hainsworth.com for a week or so.

I'd love to see more icons. Is there a source for them or did you make them yourself?

Noticed a few things,

A. the search bar is not showing up, not sure why, any idea?

Blah! Error. I don't know what happened, all was going well I was going back into all my old archive posts adding the 'More' tage to shorten them up to work better with this theme and all of a sudden my site goes FUBAR. I don't think it was something with the theme but if anyone can help me fix it?

@kris: I guess it's because you have too many pages. Try disabling registration at the admin center. Or you can delete line#33 in header.php

Hi there, just wanted to give you a quick message to say thanks for making this public release. It's a beautiful theme.

If you get a moment could you pop those smileys over to my gmail? Do I just replace the existing smileys?

Another quick Q, whats the bit of HTML to give an image some padding from the text in a post?
Also, how would one go about creating child Pages? I can see the link in the main nav bar, but when I click on that, I can't see a link to get to a child page? Any idea?

@Tom: Emoticons are in your gmail inbox.

1. Those ugly ones are located in wp-includes/images/smilies/, just replace them.

2. To add some padding to the emots within posts, open the css file, and add this:

.postentry img.wp-smiley {
padding: 0 2px;
}

3. To create a Child page, u need to select a "Page Parent" on the right hand side while u r creating it, everything should go fine. I visited your site but I didn't see you have a child page displayed at the navbar. :em17:

I deleted my child page because I wasnt sure if the theme would support them. I've added one underneath Legends, called Test. Could you have a quick look?

Another cheeky question, if I insert an image in a post (not just a smiley) will the code .postentry img.wp-smiley {
padding: 0 2px;
} you listed earlier put some padding on that as well?
At the moment there would be text right up against the picture on my About Me page, so I removed the pic.

@Tom: I am terribly sorry! I didn't remember that the codes I wrote had a limitation on that.

Please open header.php, search for "&depth=1",

"1" is what u need to change.
"2" will give u back the first level child pages, or u can definitely remove the whole "&depth=1".

I sent theme again, please check mail. Padding will not affect on images other than smilies.

If you need further help, please feel free to yell at me.

Have editted the header, but was wondering if there was a way to make the child page appear only if you clicked on parent page, in this case 'The Legends' is the parent, and I'd like 'test' to appear somewhere only when the user is on The Legends page.

Another quirky question, where would I put the the_meta()
tags, index.php? Where would I put it for it to display at the bottom of a post? I've got a custom field called 'Currently Browsing:'

I'm learning loads by flicking thru the php files.

Use the following codes:

But u must replace the "TOM" with the ID of page "The Legend".

About the tags, I suggest u use plugin Ultimate Tag Warrior. Do some settings in the admin center and it will automatically include tags for u at the end of each post.

but not sure about the timestamp.

Anyone got any tips on how to skip password protected posts from displaying? I'd like to have a category that contains nothing but password protected entries, but I really don't want regular visitors to even know those articles exist. Any tips?

Michael, could you create a user category for the people you want to see the posts (or use the built in 'contributor/subscriber/author etc' ones) and require that they log in to the the posts? Then you could hide the posts from other people but leave them visible to people who are logged in as one of the user categories I mentioned. Not sure how you would do that last part though.

Hi there, hope all is well.

I've decided that I'll just have links to blog posts in place of the Legends Page, I'll post the stories as entries, then put permalinks to the post on the page. Not too confident inside the php files.

UTW is great for having the social bookmarking feature to the right when you click on a post, thats a fantastic feature.

Not too sure on how to get it to work with Custom Field though, surely the best way to do that would be a small tag in a php file? Its a feature native to WP, I just wanted to get a 'Currently Browsing' field.

@azmie: Font is "Guild of Professional Actors" and it is in your mailbox. The header.gif included in the package is right what u need, isn't it?

@Tom: I don't quite understand. Do you want "Currently Browsing..." to be displayed in the title or what? To be frank I am not familiar with Custom Field, but I would like to do all I can to help.

I just noticed that the style.css might not be working all right.
when I change the font setting in IE by View->Fonts->small/medium/large...all the fontsizes actually varied accordingly.
I know little about CSS, but, shouldn't the fontsizes have all been set already in the style.css file?

@fishee: There are only several "font-size" selectors within the css, you can try playing with them 1by1, but remember not to modify the 62.5%, that resets globally 1em to 1px.

@don: I don't quite understand. CSS selector ".postcomment" should be what ur after?

I've got the comments set to admin approval. Guess I'll have to adjust gravatar size too. Hopefully Tom will open his grav site soon.

As for color I am looking at a nice golden color that would pull the blues, green, and orange together, and not be to strong to over power the eyes or text. Perhaps a shade of the gold out lining this text box?

hi there,

i realise in internet explorer 7, this theme will break... if the left pane is shorter than the right pane, the right pane will overflow to the bottom... so what i m trying to say is that the bottom seems to stick to the bottom of the left pane ..

in IE 7 .. and you will realise the right hand side is not rendered properly... i m not sure bout ie6.. dont have ie6 in my system...

Yes, UTW has to be installed and activated if u want Tags to be available within the ELA page.

I never tried Inline Asides so there's nothing I can tell, sorry. But it should be easy.

Hi Ilemoned, i'm trying to display the utw tags in the bottom block, under recent entries, if possible, how? I borrowed some code from the not so fresh theme. I thought maybe it would need a new div to do this.However, am not sure if thats the solution?

The fresh theme provided by you is truly professional looking and I love it so much.

I've downloaded the file and trying to reload to the admin panel and noticed a broken theme -

"The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template."

wptheme-fresh-compact-1.0 the stylesheet is missing.

Can you tell me what went wrong??

Couple questions.

#1 - How can I make the title overlapping the header go away and not appear?

Inline asides is basically just adding some code to the index to make asides happen. It's not a plugin like the sideblog asides, though works similar. I wish i knew more php I found a tutorial here on it. Also the codex here gives the inline asides instructions. Your help is very much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Dan, after a glance at the Codex page you provided, I now got an idea about what "Asides" are.

If I didn't make it wrong, "Asides" are very short posts (in 1 sentence or 2) within a certain category, which don't appear amount ordinary posts, instead, they go to the sidebar or somewhere else you specified. Right?

Well, It's easy to deal with the codes, however you'll need to tell me how you want them look like. Please feel free to send me an email with more detial, better include your blog url. I'll be glad to help.

I still love/use your theme (butter,butter). I have a request - How do I get the Recent entries at the bottom to be two column instead of one. basically replacing the "your list" column? So the first column does 1-10 and the second does 11-20.

I noticed that the origional link I gave out earier doesn't work cause it points to wp-admin.

I uploaded the zip to the wp-admin directory sorry if this caused problems for anyone.

Hi LEMONed.

After a bit of asking on the Wordpress support forum I found and adapted a bit of PHP. Like this...

get_results("SELECT ID, post_title FROM $wpdb->posts WHERE post_status = 'publish' AND post_date_gmt

the important bit is the offset=10. Works a treat. Just thought I would pass that on, in case somebody else wants to know.

Bewdy! I have just finished porting the theme with some mods.

Dude, is there any way i get links to show up in a different page. that way, i would not have them on the sidebar.

Also I would like to add some code after each post on the post page. Can you please tell me how i should do that - what template file.

2. You'll need to open single.php and add your codes somewhere before

Hi:
Been playing with this theme and have managed to include AJAX tabbed section.

I have a section for sponsors but I can't get rid of the surrounding image rectangle. Also, it appears the sidebar butts up to the edge of the main content area and I can't see a simple way od solving those issues.

Any clues please?

Sorted out borders, but the sidebar butting to the edge of the content area remains an irritation. I've combined this theme with the JS 'tabifier' to achieve the effect of in-sidebar tabbed sections. In the second one, I've mashed up some del.icio.us feeds into Grazr and then embedded them in the tabbed navigation.

The only thing I'm not 100% sure about is whether it renders correctly in IE (eeek!!) Anyone out there know please?

Actually it was the links- they were not showing up correctly. I have used widgets to fix that.
Also, yes, I did figure out the single.php
Thank you for the emoticons.
I uploaded them in the images folder, but, I dont see them in my blog, I mean it shows normal emoticons.
Am I missing something?

Hi lemoned,

i added wordspew "shoutbox" to my blog and realise that when people used smile while adding comments, the smiley picture will have the lightblue colored border box. How to add/edit the css to remove the border from showing with smiley when being append to any post or comment?

Just thought i'd let you guys know that in order to change the 'Your List' section content. You need to edit the bottom.php file in the theme directory. Its not generated from the database, it's all manually edited. The tag you're looking for in the file is "bottom-mid". Re-upload it and you're done.

Fantastic job! Thanks for all the hard work.

I have a couple tutorials on my blog and use the tag for the code and it was either going across the screen or getting cut off by the sidebar.

The addition of 'overflow:auto;' to the blockquote{} in the CSS fixed it right up.

I love this theme! May I please have the emoticons as well? They're the nicest smilies I've seen. Are they free to use?

I'm using the compact version. The sidebar isn't working properly in IE7, as you can see from my website which is under construction. If the post is short, the sidebar doesn't display fully. Have you worked out a fix for this bug yet?

I'm using a Mac. This theme doesn't work properly here, and I kind of couldn't figure out what's the problem.

Here's the thing: although I change 'sort_column=id' to 'sort_column=name', the categories still appear in a random manner, not alphabetically as supposed.

Could you shed light on this trouble, please! Thank you very much

I just found out that the problem, which I mentioned yesterday, was actually not a problem, but a layout issue: hierarchical category list doesn't display in a hierarchical manner.

Can you fix this in future release ? Thank You!

@powwow: 我没看过gravatar2插件. 可能是调用的代码不一样? 另外Gravatar网站虽然重开了, 但目前仍然很多bug, 似乎在重开后注册或更换的Gravatar都显示不了.

LEMONed,我遇到了一个郁闷的问题，请看一下veola.net。我不知道你在中国还是国外，主机是bluehost的，中国用户访问可能慢一些，请忍耐一下。
打开veola.net的首页就可以看见问题了，就是header的宽度我设置成100%了，但是content和sidebar部分还有一部分剩余。问题就是我没找到在哪里控制“sidebar和content的宽度之和”的地方。只有单独的sidebar和content设置，当然我知道这样也是正常的，不需要有“sidebar和content的宽度之和”这个语句。但是我很不解的就是你再点击about页或者那个hello world的文章链接的时候，出现的页面排版是正常的。不明白是为什么。http://www.veola.net/blog/wp-content/themes/fresh/style.css是我改了之后的css文件，不知道问题出在那里。事实上我想实现的是整体content sidebar是100％宽度，但是sidebar限定350px，剩下的部分给content，content的宽度随浏览者的分辨率不同自动拉伸和调节。我知道content和sidebar之间有一小部分空白是其分界的，不规定content宽度是不行的，所以我规定了content宽度为61％，不知道我描述的问题LEMONed能不能在百忙之中抽空看一下。

此外我还有一个问题，就是后台可以建立page，比如我有一个link页还有一个about页面。我想在about页面的sidebar位置加上一段代码，但是link页面不会受到影响，可以实现吗？是不是要什么插件才可以的？

算了我完全屈服了，firefox下和safari下全走形，但是firefox走形的地方safari没有问题，safari走形的地方firefox又没有问题。最后我只修改了outline和bottom这两个class的宽度，调节成100％，然后bottom的三个部分变成了竖排列的了，这一点safari和firefox倒是比较一致...

希望老大能回答我的第2个问题，就是page页加代码的问题。至于css文件这个，我还是自己想办法解决好了，这个需要无数次尝试，我就不耽误老大时间了

晕～～我在IE下、Maxthon下看都是如此，sidebar 跟左边的 content 不平行，而是在 content 的右下方。Windows XP SP2 Pro 中文版，IE6。在FF下倒是正常的。

刚才换了两台机器看仍然是这样，一台XP，一台Windows2003，都是IE6。

@Naco:IE就是笨啊..我想想... 你点进去那些没图的post, 看sidebar是不是正常了? 那几幅图的宽度都为500px, 加上border就超出文章区的宽度了. 你试试把图片缩窄10px.

@Darren: Though "line-height" is the proper way to fix this, you can simply modify the paddings:

I have one question - I use fresh-compact theme, which is wonderfull. But I do not know if it really works with widgets. Because in my case it does not.

and the second question. I would like to to have four different sections for stories: Basketball, footbal, tenis, swimming. Is it possible to change Category to four different "categories" - Their name should be tenis, basketball... and not category. How to do that?

1. you mentioned that this theme is ready for Brian's Latest Comments plugin, but when i try installed it (this theme) the 'Reply to this comment' text does not appear in the comment text box. Does it mean that it is not supported?

2. In the recent entry, I only want to show all the posts but not the pages. How can I do that?

Great theme, but it´s not translation friendly as it does´t uses the gettext domain nor .mo and poEdit´s files.
Hum.. it WAS because I´ve modded it and now I can translate using poEdit. The Brazilian Portuguese .mo file is available for download at my blog.

What do you suggest to developer to include on it ? More plugins compatibility I think.

I figured out a way to get the side bar to work properly in IE7 so that it displays fully and doesn't overrun the bottom section when page content is less than the side bar.

Go into footer.php and at the top of the code is:

put a before and a after that line and your pages will display correctly. At least it does for me. Give it a try.

Hi,

I'm using WP 2.1.1 and this theme. For some reason I have a "Home" Button and a "Welcome" Button which link both to the root URL. How can I remove one of them?

Wir nutzen "not so fresh",... was ja eigentlich nur eine kleine Änderung von Grafiken, bzw. der CSS ist.
Dieses hier verwendete Template sieht jedoch komplett anders aus,.... kann man das irgendwo downloaden?

in the IE they have a bug that put all that have in the sidebar, in the last post, it doent apear in the top of the blog.

I have one small problem, all my images have a light blue border which looks a little odd. I've looked at all the posts here and I see it's been mentioned before, but must have missed the answer. Hi there,

I really really like this theme! It's the best! But in IE6 the menu doesn't appear completly. It's behind the main page. In firefox and IE7 no problem. I'm stuck cause I don't know how to fix this. Do you have a suggestion?

I am using your theme, however, the problem that I am facing with the theme is that the blogroll, has 0 displaying after each link, which makes it non professional, and gives an odd look.

I've discovered this theme when I'm doing a migration grom MovableType, and I want to use it for my site. But I want the categories and subcategories seen in hierarchical manner with compact theme. I've seen the hacking to do this for the theme, but not for the compact theme. I've been studying how to do this but I can't find a soluction.

First can i think you for this great theme, i have recently changed over from another theme and have so far been very impressed.

was wondering, kind of a newbie question...how do i edit the header that comes with download? wanna change to my site name, instead of showing a set of headphones and saying wordpress testsite. id like to use same header graphic but i dont think i can without a psd file right? told ya, a newbie. sorry to bother.

A very nice theme. This theme is the old design for Bartelme Design. While it does not look exactly the same as the original, it still holds many of the amazing characteristics that make Fresh, really nice.

Hi and thanks for a fabulous theme. It has made me very happy. Like Hamza, I am having the same problem with the display of a 0 in the bottom blogroll section. I'm a complete novice at php, so I would greatly appreciate any help you might be able to give. Thanks.

Hey my friend, thanks a lot for this template.

I've been modifying the fresh-compact template and I have a problem now... everything seems to be ok in firefox and IE, except for the sidebar, it disappears in IE... you can check it out on the link i wrote as my website... please let me know what can i do, im sure its just some small css code.

I have used the Fresh Theme - but I have done alot of editing to the style sheets, side bar, bottom etc to make it look how I wanted it. If you like it let me know. I also spotted an error in the style sheet for achives - the theme was ditching the margins when viewing archives, but it turned out to be a small error in coding where instead of referring to the "class" it referred to the "ID" - just a small style sheet referencing error. Once this was corrected the theme works much better. I have also moved the recent entries up from the bottom to the side bar and seems to work better

Once this was corrected the theme works much better. I have also moved the recent entries up from the bottom to the side bar and seems to work better

Can anyone help me with the install of this theme? I have uploaded it to my new blog site (hosted with blue host)...I fairly certain I followed the correct procedure, and I do see the extracted files in my directory...all I see on my site is the old standard wp blog.

Any insights would be appreciated!
